God and Money

Earning, Giving, and Living at Peace with Your Finances

God and Money

Becky was a stay-at-home mom with three little boys. She loved her sons and considered them her biggest blessing. She enjoyed being home with them, but in the area where she and her husband lived, getting by on a single income was difficult.

So, Becky looked for ways to make more money while continuing to raise her children. When she mentioned to some of her Christian friends, she was searching for these opportunities, they shamed her for wanting more money. One even accused her of not trusting God, while another questioned the sincerity of her faith.

Moving – The Process of Buying and Selling Your Home – Part Two

Moving - The Process of Buying and Selling Your House Part 2

Your home has sold, and you have an accepted offer on your new home. Now what? I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that doesn’t mean the process is over. Things can still fall apart. Or get delayed. And disagreements can occur. But in the end, it will be worth it.

This post is to let you know what the process is like. I realize that buying and selling may be different depending on where you live. I know some people use attorneys for the process. Here in California, realtors are used. If you are buying a property, your realtor may be referred to as a buyer’s realtor. And likewise, if you are selling your home, your realtor is a seller’s realtor. Most likely, your realtor will represent you in both transactions. Other realtors will represent the buyer of your home and the sale of the home you are purchasing.

Moving – The Process of Buying and Selling Your Home – Part One

Moving - The Process of Buying and Selling Your Home Part One

As some of you may know, my husband and I have recently been involved in the process of buying and selling our home. It started early November 2022 and ended in late February 2023. That’s longer than we usually have experienced.

It is currently a hard season to be buying or even selling your home. That doesn’t mean it’s impossible. And our experience, buying our 6th home, has been the worst we have ever had. Don’t let that scare you. We have had experiences that were simple and stress free.

Super Savings at Dollar Tree

Dollar Tree is a great place to save money.

Super Savings at Dollar Tree

When a Dollar Tree was coming to my small city, Facebook lit up. The comments were mainly made by people that didn’t want it coming to their city. They wanted something more exciting, like a new restaurant or another gym.

And then the teachers saw the post. They were excited that after school, they didn’t have to drive 15 -20 minutes away to buy supplies for their classroom. In the end, Dollar Tree was already in process, planning to open soon. No amount of positive or negative reaction on Facebook, at that point, would change their plans. And I think now that they have been in town several years, people have recognized their value.

Bequeathing Your Assets – Both Large and Small

Old car and quilts

When my grandmother in Minnesota passed away, I didn’t realize that she had marked a small cream and sugar set for me. It was my inheritance from her. Her daughters had been told to give these items to the name on the bottom, in the event of her death. This was the first time someone had set something aside for me to be delivered after they died. I attended her funeral, not realizing that she had marked that for me. In fact, most of the items in her home had been given a label so that, when she died, the item would go to the person she felt would appreciate it the most. I don’t remember it, however, my grandmother remembered me mentioning that I really like that set. So it became mine.

Can you imagine going through everything in your home and putting a post-it-note on each item so that everyone gets something? That would take a lot of time and would it hold up in court if someone protested? Possibly not. However, if it is part of your signed, notarized will, a person trying to challenge your desire would fail.

When a Deal is Not a Deal

It might look like a deal but it isn't always.

Do you find yourself buying something on sale or clearance when you don’t really need it? Are there times a company offers you a deal that is hard to resist? Maybe it came in your mail. Or possibly you saw a commercial on T.V. Maybe someone called and quoted you a great deal on car insurance or health insurance. The list goes on. And some offers seem too good to pass up. But are they? It’s best to check it out first before you spend the money and maybe end up regretting your purchase.

Something that I have fallen for is the ridiculously inexpensive magazine subscription. For only $7, I can get a year of XYZ magazine. Regularly priced at $29.99. I wouldn’t mind that magazine, and it’s only $7. Why not? Well, I’ve lived without that magazine for my whole life. But, once it arrives, I realize I don’t even take the time to look at it. Was it a deal or a waste of $7?

My mother subscribed to the local newspaper. When she paid the bill of over $600 for a year of daily service, she felt it wasn’t worth it for the little she looked at it. I told her to cancel it and get a refund. She called, and they talked her into a better deal for a shorter period of time. She took the deal because it was less expensive than what she had been paying. But it was not a deal because she didn’t want the paper. They apparently have outstanding salespeople over at the newspaper office.

Retirement Plan Gone Awry

When a retirement plan goes wrong goes awry

Before I retired I was planning for my retirement. It seemed like the thing to do. It seemed the smartest thing to do.

I told my daughter on a Saturday that I planned to work another year or two and then retire from my part-time job. So that meant I would have worked for my current employer for about two years. For the most part, I really enjoyed my job. It was flexible, and the work was work I’d been doing for over 20 years, so it was not difficult or stressful. My retirement plan seemed like a good plan for both my husband and me.

5 Reasons You Should Give to Charities

Give to Charity

If you have never donated to charity, you have been missing out. There are so many positive reasons to donate. You can donate money, food, used clothing, furniture, books, vehicles, stocks, and mutual funds. You can donate your time to help organize, hold a fundraiser, or work in a Thrift Store that raises money for charities. Plus so much more. There are so many benefits to giving to charities.

Maybe you have never donated because you felt like you can’t afford it. That is between you and God. I cannot force you to donate, but I believe that if you do, you will be blessed, even if, in your opinion, it is only something small. Giving of your time is also a donation. This can be once a week or once a year. I have seen people that are retired turning to one of their local charities to volunteer part-time.

Saving Pennies and Dollars when Traveling

Saving Pennies and Dollars when Traveling

Every time you travel, and sometimes at home, there are ways to save money on many of the things you do. Here are things that helped us save money on a recent trip through three states. And some mistakes that we learned, giving us a new way to save money on the next trip.

Food

1. When in a restaurant, order water, instead of a soda or ice tea. Everyone needs to drink more water, so this is a great way to get in some of that water and save a few dollars as you do it.
