Labor Day

Woman mechanic Labor Day

Does anyone know why we celebrate Labor Day? In the United States, we will observe Labor Day on Monday, September 6, 2021. Many people will have the day off from work, as a paid holiday. There may be parades, picnics, bar-b-ques, and even parties. Many people look at Labor Day as the end of summer. It may be the last camping trip of the summer. Some people will decorate their homes with red, white, and blue, the colors of our flag. Most stores will have Labor Day weekend sales going on for three or four days.

So back to the question, does anyone know why we celebrate Labor Day? Let’s look beyond the way we celebrate it today and take a peek at how it began.

31 Ways to Spread Kindness and Compassion

Salvation Army Bell Ringer

At the end of the day, I find myself happier if I have done something to spread kindness or compassion to others. Of course, it doesn’t happen every day, but I recommend doing it often, especially if you start your day in a not-so-cheerful way.

Some days something can happen where you are that gives you a split second to act on it. Try to be aware and take action when that moment happens. Other ways to show compassion and kindness may take a little more planning or doing on your part. Spread kindness and compassion to strangers and people you know.

I believe everyone has heard about paying for the order of the person behind you in the drive-through. These ideas will give you options of other things to do. I hope you consider picking out a few items to do. I’m sure they will give your day a lift and probably a smile on your face.

Solvang, California – Something for Everybody

Something for everyone in Solvang

We recently went to Solvang, the “Danish Capital of America,” with our children and grandchildren. We spent four full days and five nights. Even though we saw many things, there is still a list of things that we could have done, but time ran out.

Yes, we spent a little bit of time relaxing, but there was a lot of time on the go. Since we had children ages 4 months to 8 years, we focused on mainly seeing things that interested the children and threw in a few things for the adults. We were also working around nap time on the two youngest.

63 Amazing Bucket List Ideas – for Any Age

63 Amazing bucket list ideas for all ages

Everyone should have a Bucket List. Yours can be an amazing bucket list with these ideas.

A Bucket List for a 20-year-old will likely be very different from a Bucket List for a person 60 years old. To do it over, I wish I had started a bucket list when I was in my twenties.

A person in their thirties might have a Bucket List with any number of the following ideas in it.

  1. Retire at 45
  2. Climb Mount Kilimanjaro.
  3. Visit every country in the world
  4. Own a Ferrari before my 50th birthday.
  5. Become President of the United States.

A Bucket List can be written out in a few minutes. Usually, a person making a bucket list may have thought about it for a while, but not yet written it down. For others, it can take a long time to come up with a list. If you have a life-threatening disease, it may be that you start a long bucket list, hoping that you have time to finish the list. Instead of a Bucket List, you can also refer to your list as a “Before I Go to Heaven List.”

It’s Garden Time!

It's Garden time

It’s garden time and my husband came home with his collection of plants to start our spring/summer garden. I looked at the receipt and thought we could have purchased a lot of produce at the grocery store. But, nothing compares to the happiness he gets from his garden. Plus you can’t beat the freshness of homegrown vegetables.

It is our garden in the sense that it is in our backyard. And our money is spent to buy the plants and fertilizer. But my husband is in charge. This past winter my husband did a winter garden. It was his first time. He planted onions, green onions, bok choy, brussel sprouts, and broccoli. The bok choy was great. He shared it with others. Something my husband doesn’t seem to do is plant the seeds a few weeks apart. He had so much bok choy at the same time, a lot of it was thrown out.

The brussel sprouts looked great until the long stem of sprouts stopped growing, We have seen them growing in a field and ours never came close to that. The broccoli was the wrong kind. Instead of big clumps, they were long and thin. They won’t be in our garden ever again.
