And I Have Told You These Things
If God is for Us . . .
Accepting That God Loves Me, Even When I Don’t Love Myself
For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” – Galatians 5:14 NIV
That’s a powerful verse, and it’s found a few more times throughout the Bible, too. And I’m betting you have no problem loving others. Sure, sometimes family can be a pain, or our kids can make us crazy, but we still love them when it comes down to it. It’s ‘easy’ to love others.
But how well do you do with loving yourself?
“That was a dumb thing to say.”
“How could I have been so stupid to do that?”
“I’m so fat.”
“My nose is too big.”
“I’m so ugly.”
“I’m not smart enough.”
Those words, or similar ones, are often spoken repeatedly inside our heads. They aren’t words we would ever think of saying to those around us – friends or family – but we can speak them to ourselves without hesitation. Why is that?

October 2023 Goals Update
It’s a different list this year. It’s shorter. I hope it’s more doable if I only focus on three things. I didn’t do so well last year. How did you do? I hope you are better than me. Here is my October monthly update.
- Walk 1000 miles. Progress: I made reasonable progress. I’ve walked 711.8 miles for the year. That leaves only 288.2 for the next 2 months. I think I can meet this goal as long as I keep up my walking routine and average over 145 miles a month, which obviously I am not doing. I’m going to have to start really pushing it. It could be hopeless but I’m still pressing forward.
- Read the Bible in a year. Progress: I’m up to date. My church started this January 1. I have to admit; it has been very interesting. Even though I’ve read the whole Bible several times in my life, I always seem to discover something new.
- Lose five pounds. Progress: Starting over. In July and August, I was shocked to be gaining weight practically every three days. I thought I had stabilized and hoping to lose weight again soon. At the end of October, I was up 4 pounds from where I started. There is still hope. My health is partly to blame. I have 3 appointments in November. Hopefully, they will address that issue and the scale will once again be going down.
So if you have a list, share it with me in the comments below. We can do this together, and hopefully, we all succeed this year. So, really, how did you do last year? And did that change your list for this year–either longer or shorter? Two months to go in the year. Yikes.
